Autonomous power supply for a pedestrian crossing safety system
Toulouse metropolitan area, France

Toulouse metropolitan area, France
Site presentation
The Toulouse Metropolitan Area wished to improve the safety of pedestrian crossings at the entrances and exits of a multimodal interchange hub near a railway station. As the street lighting switches off at 11 pm, the aim was to maintain lighting with an independent power supply to improve safety at the pedestrian crossings. For this purpose, the turnkey Wattway PACK pedestrian crossing solution was deployed on 3 pedestrian crossings. The energy generated by the Wattway PACK is used to power illuminated bollards at night to mark the pedestrian crossings, making them more visible to passers-by.
How the
system works
Each Wattway PACK consists of three 125 Wp photovoltaic modules (generation 2022), a secure electrical cabinet and a set of four illuminated LED bollards. The modules are installed on top of the pavement near the pedestrian crossing and users walk on them regardless of the pavement surface. The modules convert solar energy into electricity during the day.
The electrical cabinet is installed near the modules and contains the electrical equipment needed to convert and store the energy, so that the equipment can be powered independently at night. The 4 illuminated bollards are positioned at the four corners of the pedestrian crossing and their independent power supply is enough for 2 LEDs per bollard. The whole system produces enough energy to power the equipment independently at night.
Why did the Toulouse Metropolitan
Area choose Wattway PACK?
Wattway PACK makes pedestrian crossings safe and provides services at isolated sites in energy blackspots or areas with restricted grid access.
The Metropolitan Area wanted a renewable, independent, local and sustainable energy solution.
Wattway PACK is tamper-proof, visually unobtrusive and quick to install, requiring few administrative formalities and minimising any inconvenience to users.
