Autonomous surveillance camera system
Montpellier Urban Area, France

Montpellier Urban Area, France
Site presentation
Montpellier Metropolitan Council wished to monitor a roundabout near the Montpellier ring road to monitor traffic density, assist the work of the police and improve safety in the area. With the power grid more than 150 metres away, it was more economical for the Council to deploy a Wattway PACK surveillance camera solution with an autonomous power supply from a renewable source rather than making a grid connection.
How the
system works
The system consists of 125 Wp/slab photovoltaic modules (generation 2017), a secure electrical cabinet and a surveillance camera.
The modules are installed on top of a cycle path adjacent to the roundabout, near a mast on which the surveillance camera is fitted.
They convert solar energy into electricity during the day.
The electrical cabinet is installed near the modules and contains the electrical equipment needed to convert and store the energy for an autonomous power supply for the equipment 24 hours a day.
Why did the Montpellier Metropolitan
Council choose Wattway PACK?
Wattway PACK makes it possible to install surveillance cameras and provide services on isolated sites in energy blackout zones or areas with restricted grid access. The Metropolitan Council wanted a renewable, autonomous, local and sustainable energy solution for this purpose. In addition, Wattway PACK is quick to install, requiring few administrative formalities and minimising any inconvenience to users.
Lastly, the camera’s many functions (including frost and condensation protection devices) consume a substantial amount of energy, which could only be provided by a tamper-proof ground-mounted device sheltered from the wind that blends into its visual environment.
